The Bottom of Fifth Avenue

Looking north up Fifth Avenue through the 1892 Washington Arch with the 1929 No. 1 and 1951 No. 2 Fifth Avenue apartment buildings and the 1931 Empire State Building looming in the distance.

I really wish NYU would restore the balustrades that topped those buildings on the north side of the square. I seem to remember that the last one was taken down about 1910 -- ostensibly to permit easier snow removal. But technology can handle that today, and the buildings would look much better in something more like their original exterior form.

(Perhaps the powers that be might negotiate this in exchange for allowing something that NYU wants to do elsewhere.)
