Today came news that one of the best treats of Washington Square Park, Violet the Red-tailed Hawk, has passed away after undergoing surgery to remove her right foot after necrosis set in. I'd been watching Violet and her mate Bobby from both the park and my window since I moved to the Village in 2009. Above, Violet pictured in March 2010 with nest making materials sitting on 11 Fifth Avenue (The Brevoort). The nest they went on to build on top of 1 Fifth Avenue didn't work out for the pair in 2010 but this past May the couple had a baby Red-tailed named Pip from a nest on NYU's Bobst Library. The NYTimes installed a camera and those who were interested watched as Pip went from a tiny hatchling to a fairly large RTH before it left the nest in early July. I always enjoyed watching them soar over the park (hunting rats) and especially from my bedroom window. Violet will be missed.
